According to Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist, human beings have a hierarchy of needs. At the top of the hierarchy is the need for self-actualization. The need to become better, to find our potentials, and to actualize it. This is the probable explanation of why we keep on creating resolutions and yearly goals.
For 2019, let’s aim to improve ourselves and satisfy our need for self-actualization through simple, easy, and attainable ways.
Exercise is important not only to improve your physique but also to improve your health. This year, find more time to have at least 15-20 minutes of exercise every day. Make exercise part of your daily routine. Don’t make excuses. If we can squeeze being plugged in social media to our busy day, we can also squeeze in a 15-minute exercise.
Exercising can improve our productivity. If the body is healthy it can also improve the health of the mind.
Education doesn’t start at school nor it ends in school. Education continues if you choose to continue it. We are already in the information age, everything can be learned if we only choose to read.
Invest in books. Invest in self-help books that improve your skills and your attitude.
Buy books about your idol or someone you look up to. Learn from their routines, learn how they think, learn their attitudes and be inspired. Expand your horizon through learning new ideas.
Invest in Yourself
Invest in yourself. They say that the best investment is bonds, real estate properties, stocks. No! The best investment is investing in yourself. Bank knowledge and ideas. Bank experiences.
Invest in yourself not only through your body and mind. Invest in your beauty. Invest in things that boost your confidence. Upgrade your wardrobe, upgrade your skincare, get a new haircut, and do things that make you feel better and great about yourself.
Find a Mentor
They say that when you are still young, don’t find a job that pays great. Find a job that gets you a great boss. Someone that can mentor you. Well, a mentor isn’t just someone who is above you. Sometimes, mentors can be anyone.
Find someone that inspires you to become better. Find your mentor. Find a person that can teach you to do better, that can criticize you, that knows your craft and can help you develop it. Mentors can be an ex-boss or a previous teacher.
Sometimes mentors can be the janitor of your office, a colleague, or someone you can learn from.
Seen Sparks Joy in Netflix? Read Marie Kondo’s book of tidying up?
We do need a bit of cleaning, now and then. Clean up your trash, throw your garbage, arrange and organize your things. A clean room, office, workstation or desk, inspires joy and creativity. It also improves efficiency because if everything is put into one place, you don’t have to spend time finding over a pile of papers.
Treat Yo’ Self!
We should always strike a balance between grinding and chilling. So, for every accomplishment that we have achieved this year, don’t forget to treat yourself.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. You also deserve to rest. You deserve that ice cream after a month of weight loss diet. You deserve to buy a new dress after overspending your time at the office. You deserve to have a break and not be guilty when you’re resting on a holiday or on your day off.
Treat yourself to something nice and to something that makes you happy.
Practice your Craft
Consistent practice makes perfect. If you want to improve this year, you have to practice your craft. Don’t just read books, implement them. If you’re a writer, practice writing poems or novel. Find someone to read and critic it.
If you’re a photographer, take photos. Take as much as possible. It doesn’t have to be perfect but you’ll keep on improving. Don’t strive for perfection, strive for progress.
It takes 10,000 hours for people to be expert in their craft, so practice as much as you can. If you’re a blogger, like me, don’t let the number of views stop you from blogging.
Don’t be complacent when you reach your goals, make more goals. Always strive for progress.
Always strive to sleep better this year. Let us not romanticize overtime culture in the office. You are more important than your job. Find time to rest well and enough.
Don’t sacrifice your sleep over irrelevant contents on social media. Have a consistent sleeping pattern. Sleep early and wake up early to have your exercise.
Lack of sleep has a toll on our body so this year, let’s sleep better. If you have a problem with sleeping, drink calming tea or milk. Seek advice from your doctor if you have trouble sleeping.
Make your own ways to improve yourself. You can add more to your list but I hope this helps in making you start your road to improvement.
